All-Ireland Colleges & Universities Plate
W.I.T. ‘A’ win historic match
John Douglas reports
History was made on Tuesday last when for the first time in the history of Waterford Institute of Technology, two W.I.T. soccer teams played each other in the quarterfinal of the All-Ireland Colleges & Universities Plate competition when W.I.T. ‘A’ team played the ‘B’ team.
The ‘A’ team, with a number of League of Ireland players in their ranks got off to a great start and were 2-0 up after 15 minutes thanks to a brace from Shane Nolan.
Hard working Haydn Galibert of the ‘B’ team reduced the deficit on 30 minutes as the game became very competitive. Just on the stroke of half-time Aaron O’Connor scored to leave the ‘A’ team 3-1 ahead at the break.
Galibert kept his side in it with his second goal on 65 minutes but the experience of the ‘A’ team was the decisive difference and they added two further goals through Cormac Breslin and Graham Byrne.
The very impressive Haydn Galibert was not finished though and the man of the match added his third goal, a superb strike from 30 yards to leave the score 6-3 in favour of the W.I.T. ‘A’. They now play away to Athlone I.T. in the semi-final tomorrow (Wednesday). The final will be played in Carriganore in the second week of March.
