Waterford United have received the good news that they have been awarded a Premier division licence ahead of the 2016 season following a meeting of the Independent Club Licensing Committee of the Football Association of Ireland.
The Blues were one of the 16 clubs to be awarded with a Premier Division licence ahead of the new season but this is subjected to the club having a number of documents signed prior to February 29th, while four First Division licences were issued by the FAI ahead of the season that gets underway March 4th
Although it was widely expected that the Blues wouldn’t apply for the Premier division licence this season, the hard work behind the scenes in the build-up to the deadline date of licencing submission ensured that the club were in a position to be judge at the highest level.
Speaking on the announcement of a licence, General manager of the club Paul Cleary said, “We’re all delighted to get a Premier division licence for the coming season and we are confident that the number of issues that the committee have highlighted will be addressed prior to February 29th.
“I’d like to thank all those that have helped to ensure that the club has gotten a licence ahead of the new season and it’s the culmination of a lot of hard work from everybody involved. The decision indicates that the structures and procedures in place at the club are of the highest standards required in the League of Ireland.
“The licence is the culmination of a lot of hard work by our licencing officer Chris Everett and the management committee to pull together
Waterford United have been handed a home draw in the first round of the EA Sports League cup as Roddy Collins side will take on Cork side Rockmount in what should be a winnable fixture after the draw was made by the FAI National League Executive Committee.
The match is scheduled to take place on either Monday March 21st or Tuesday, March 22nd , at 7.45pm and the 2016 competition will see six teams in four regional pools, with two teams from each section set to make it into the quarterfinals.
